Lionel
Baker leads Sarwan XI to victory in intriguing low scoring
match
–
COOLIDGE, ANTIGUA – Irresistible and miserly fast bowling
from Lionel Baker and the other Ramnaresh Sarwan’s XI
bowlers led their side to victory over the Chris Gayle XI by
28 runs in an intriguing and highly entertaining low scoring
affair in the sixth practice match of the Stanford
Superstars training camp on Sunday August 10.
Captain Sarwan with an unbeaten and boundaryless 24 (21b)
led his team to 117 for 8 from their 20 overs but his
bowlers restricted the opposition to a paltry 89 for 5 off
20 overs to secure the win.
Runs were scarce on the cool Sunday evening under lights at
the Stanford Cricket Ground as the bowlers dominated. For
Sarwan’s XI Dwayne Bravo, battling against an ankle injury
made 23 before he was run out for the third game in a row.
All rounder Darren Sammy picked up three victims for 18 runs
from his four overs while there were two wickets for
Grenadian pacer Nelon Pascal (4-0-34-2).
Tonito Willett, the medium pace all rounder from Nevis was
again outstanding with the ball, his 4 overs costing a dozen
runs and he picked up the wicket of opener Andre Fletcher
for 9. Left arm spinner Dave Mohammed allowed 22 runs from
his four overs as he too picked up one wicket.
It was the bowlers on Sarwan’s XI who came up trumps though
as they defended their modest score. Left arm Barbadian
spinner Sulieman Benn produced four miserly overs for 8 runs
while Bravo, bowling of a short and cautious run up,
delivered four overs for 13 runs. Jamaican pacer Jerome
Taylor sent down four overs for 20 runs but it was the
irresistible pace of Montserratian pacer Baker who set back
the Gayle XI.
He first rocked the captain’s middle stump then came back to
bowl top scorer Danza Hyatt for 24 (43b, 1x4, 1x6). Baker
finished with 2 wickets for 12 runs from his quota of four
overs.
Willet made 13 from 28 balls but he and Hyatt could not get
the ball away as they labored for 57 deliveries to put on a
stagnating 35 run third wicket partnership.
The game was also short on boundaries which are a common
feature in 20/20 cricket. Sarwan’s XI hit six fours and one
six while Gayle’s XI managed only three fours and two sixes
for a total of nine fours and three sixes in the game.
Though the runs were scarce, the Sunday evening crowd were
vociferous as they enjoyed the intrigue of the Sarwan XI
putting the strangle hold on the batsmen.
The final game of the Stanford Superstars camp will be on
Tuesday evening at 7pm at the picturesque Stanford Cricket
Ground when the big screen will be activated to provide some
additional entertainment for the fans. The game will
represent the final opportunity for players in the 32 man
training camp to win the vote of the Stanford Superstars
selection panel headed by the legendary Sir Viv Richards.
The Stanford 20/20 for 20 is the richest team prize for a
single sporting match with a total prize pool of US$20
million on offer. A series of five annual matches will be
played between the Stanford Superstars and England from
November 1, 2008, at the Stanford Cricket Ground in Antigua.
US$11 million goes to the eleven winning active team players
with US$1 million to be shared between the 12th man and
other non-playing squad members of the winning team in
Antigua and a further US$1 million to the management team.
The remaining prize money will be shared between the England
and Wales Cricket Board and the West Indies Cricket Board.
The Stanford Superstars will be a team selected from active
players from the 2006 and 2008 regional Stanford 20/20
Tournaments. The Stanford 20/20 for 20 will use the iconic
black bats and silver stumps for which the Stanford 20/20
Tournament is now famous.
