Tropical Storm Gustav jogged South and intensified overnight
Wednesday, positioning itself along the Southern coast of
Jamaica. The storm is traveling very slowly (stationary to
6mph) and is expected to regain Hurricane status again on
Thursday. It is expected to move West and eventually back to
the West North West later today suggesting Jamaica could be
in for the worst of whatever it has to offer. It bears
noting however, that the errors associated with the forecast
strength and direction of these storms are fairly large.
According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, at 8 AM
EDT, the Government of Jamaica issued a Hurricane warning
for the island. The Center of the storm was located near
latitude 17.8 N and Longitude 75.6 W or about 80 miles east
of Kingston Jamaica.
Gustav is expected to produce total
rainfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches over Southern
Cuba...and 6 to 12 inches over Haiti, Jamaica and the Cayman
Islands...with isolated maximum amounts of up to 25 inches
possible. These rains will likely produce Life-threatening
flash floods and mud slides.
